First past the post: Why world class racehorse training facilities are essential

startingstallsIn my previous blog this month I listed what makes a champion racehorse, from their pedigree to their personality. But owning the right horse means nothing without the right training facilities if a racehorse is to become a champion.

I have trained many winning racehorses and already this year we have recorded three wins and over 20 2nd places, with our horses consistently in the frame.  Drawing the best performance from each one means getting to know each horse well. Every horse is an individual and it’s important to provide a training programme which reflects this.

My ultra-modern, world-class facilities are situated in Pulborough, West Sussex on the beautiful Sussex Downs — and that means that our gallops are a simply glorious place to be. Our 6-Furlong Gallop, Winter Grass Gallop and Valley Gallops for example, provide the regular workouts which are an essential part of a horse’s training.

The Indoor Canter Way provides an all-weather facility to warm up the horses at a walk or trot and to assess them on a daily basis, and the horse walker facility means that our racehorses can be exercised regardless of weather conditions. It’s also invaluable for horses recovering from injury to help regain strength and —like humans — horses’ muscles need to cool down gradually after more intense exercise and the horse walker is ideal in achieving this.

A unique feature here is the American Bend, which has an interesting history.  Some years ago (before I took over the facility) a highly-successful race horse called ‘Dancing Brave’ was trained here by Guy Harwood.  Dancing Brave’s owner (Saudi Prince Khalid Abdullah) had the American Bend built to replicate the track at Epsom (considered to be one of the toughest tracks in the world) to give Dancing Brave experience on the steep camber. Today our horses can follow in his stride!

Our equine swimming pool offers many and varied benefits to a training programme – and the horses enjoy it! A water-based workout provides resistance without pressure on joints or tendons and helps in developing muscular strength as well as maintaining cardiovascular fitness.  The pool is also essential to our work in rehabilitating injured horses.

Our onsite veterinary facility means that we can monitor the horses on an ongoing basis and can identify a potential problem immediately. My wife and business partner, Louise, has extensive experience in providing specialised treatment and rehabilitation and we are confident that we offer unparalleled levels of treatment for the horses in our care.

Of course rest and relaxation are important too and our horses’ quarters in American Barns means that they have spacious, comfortable accommodation where they can see each other — and also keep an eye on what’s going on!

Take a look at the ‘Facilities’ section of the website to see everything that we can offer — or better still, pay us a visit.  We would be delighted to show you around!
