We’re now well into the summer racing season, with grand scale events including the Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot behind us. The Derby, as usual, delivered an exhilarating spectacle, with Australia scooping the title, making history for trainer Aidan O’Brien as he scored a hat trick – winning the Investec Derby for the third time in a row. Royal Ascot was also filled with excitement as Leading Light secured an epic win in the Gold Cup, beating the Queen’s horse Estimate at the post.
As well as enjoying some of the UK horse racing calendar’s biggest events, it’s been a particularly exciting season for us at Luke Dace Racing. We’ve taken on several new racehorses, including Secret Millionaire (who has already scooped first place at Salisbury Racecourse), Noble Cause and Romantic Link and have been travelling across the south of England to compete in more and more races.
So far this year, we’ve seen wins on the flat from not only Secret Millionaire, but also Echo Brava, Drawnfromthepast, Bobby Benton and Officer Drivel (six wins in total) and a win by American Spin on the jumps. With several new horses on board, the coming months promise to be full of anticipation and we’re confident that we can continue to secure wins on the course.
Our open day in June was a huge success, with a special guest appearance from this year’s Grand National winning jockey Leighton Aspell. The event was attended by several racehorse owners and we hope to welcome many of them on board as full-time customers.
With events such as Glorious Goodwood still to come (at the end of July), the racing calendar promises a packed and exhilarating summer. The Sussex based event is already drawing media attention, with Edie Campbell, the 23-year-old Burberry model, signed up to run in the inaugural ladies’ charity race (which she won back in 2011).
Perhaps more notably, Goodwood caused some controversy in the media this month when it agreed to change the name of the historic Steward’s Cup to the 32Red Cup, in exchange for a one-year deal and an extra £5,000 from online bookmaker 32Red. This caused a fair amount of outrage in the horseracing world as The Steward’s Cup is famed as the betting highlight of Glorious Goodwood, and has held the same name in its 174 year history, up until now of course.
We hope to attend the Glorious Goodwood event (which is based just down the road from our Pulborough training facility) and may even be fortunate enough to enter a horse or two. Alongside this, we’ll be back racing at Lingfield, Kempton and Windsor amongst other racecourses.
